How Do I Purchase DJ Insurance?

Included with General Liability are free, unlimited Certificates of Liability, available instantly, online, making it possible to add venues as Additional Insured throughout the policy period at no extra cost.
Who is Insured Under General Liability?
General Liability is available to any DJ that operates single or multiple setups who meets our underwriting guidelines.
What is Insured Under General Liability?

Working With Independent Contractors or Subcontractors
If you occasionally contract with another DJ company (Independent Contractor or subcontractor) to perform at a venue on your behalf under your company name, it is essential for you to obtain a Certificate Of Insurance from the subcontracted DJ company as proof of at least $1,000,000 of liability insurance with you and your DJ company listed as an Additional Insured. If the subcontracted DJ company is unwilling to name you on their $1,000,000 liability insurance policy as an Additional Insured, or if they do not have liability insurance at all, you may want to find another DJ company to perform on your behalf.
Reporting The Correct Number Of DJ Setups
A setup is the equipment necessary for a DJ, KJ or VJ to perform at a contracted event. To correctly report the number of setups, think about how many setups you have operating under your company name at different gigs/jobs on a single night. For example, you may employ or subcontract two DJs in addition to yourself. If you are contracted for three gigs/jobs in the same evening, you would be at one location and your employed / subcontracted DJs would be at the two other locations. In this scenario, you would need to report a total of three setups.
- Subcontractors
If your subcontractors have their own liability insurance, they must add your company as an Additional Insured to their liability policy. Once you and your DJ company are added to their policy as an Additional Insured and they provide you with a Certificate of Insurance, you do not have to report the subcontracted DJ as a setup on your DJ policy. - Employees
If you employ other DJs, KJs, or VJs, and supply them with equipment in order to perform at a gig/event, this is considered a setup. It’s possible that you may have three employees but only own two setups for employees to use at contracted events. Each setup must be counted and reported in the total number of setups when completing the application. By reporting and paying for the correct number of setups under the liability portion of the policy, you are actively helping to ensure that you have proper coverage for your DJ company.
What is Excluded (Not Covered) Under General Liability?
While you will find our General Liability coverage to be one of the broadest in the country, there are some specific exclusions usual to this form of liability insurance. The following is only summary and is not all inclusive, nor does it alter or waive any of the actual policy language. There is NO coverage, or coverage is excluded for losses or claims arising out of:
- Owned Automobile Liability
An owned auto is defined as any auto that is owned in part or in full by, or registered to, any DJ or DJ business entity. - Owned Watercraft Liability
An owned watercraft is defined as any watercraft that is owned in part or in full by, or registered to, any DJ or DJ business entity. - Owned and/or Non-Owned Aircraft Liability
This exclusion pertains to any type of aircraft, including but not limited to, hot-air or lighter-than-air balloons. - Professional Liability
This exclusion eliminates coverage for bodily injury, property damage, and personal and advertising injury arising out of the rendering of or failure to render any professional services. - Workers’ Compensation
Any and all sums that would be recoverable under Workers’ Compensation insurance, whether or not such contract exists.
Property/Equipment
If your equipment is stolen or damaged at a gig, are you protected?
Every DJ should have Property/Equipment Insurance. The last thing you should worry about is not being able to properly replace or repair property/equipment in case of a loss.
Who is Insured Under Property/Equipment?
Property/Equipment insurance is available to any DJ who owns or is financially responsible for any office or DJ equipment, or any CDs, KDs, MP3s and/or Vinyls.
What is Insured Under Property/Equipment?
Property/Equipment provides insurance coverage for any office or DJ equipment, CDs, KDs, MP3s or Vinyls, up to the specified value, against all risks of direct physical damage from any external cause, except those which are specifically excluded. The coverage is provided on a replacement cost basis (new for old), and contains a per loss deductible. RVNA Property/Equipment Insurance has two coverage options — Business Personal Property and Equipment, and Business Media (CD / KD / MP3 / Vinyl) Library, which include coverage for loss due to fire, windstorm, theft, earthquake, flood, vandalism and other perils which are not excluded. A brief description of the coverages are as follows:
- Business Personal Property and Equipment
Provides insurance coverage for any office or DJ, KJ, or VJ equipment against most risks of direct physical damage from any external cause, except those excluded. - Business Media (CD / KD / MP3 / Vinyl) Library
Provides coverage for CDs, KDs, MP3s and Vinyls owned by the insured DJ against most risks of direct physical damage from any external cause, except those excluded
Both coverages are provided on a replacement cost basis (new for old). Be sure to reference your policy for your deductible amount.

What Are Some Tips to Keep DJ Equipment Safe?
- Write down serial numbers and take photos of all the equipment that you own
- If you are uncomfortable with a setup location, let an event manager know
- When at a gig, do not leave your bag full of gear, unattended, in plain sight in the DJ booth. Ask someone to lock it in a room (like the manager’s office), or carry it on your person (for example, a laptop in a backpack)
- Have your gear elevated away from the booth table. This will help keep your kit safely out of reach from drink spillages or any other hazards
- Backups, backups, backups. Be sure to backup your software and digital music files
- Tape down any wires to prevent people from tripping and pulling down gear
- Never leave your equipment (including your laptop) unguarded in a hotel room. Use a cable lock, the hotel safe, or a USB security alarm
- Write a list of everything you took with you to a gig, and go through confirming each item is secure before you leave
- When loading equipment into your car, the trunk is absolutely the safest place. Don’t leave your gear in plain sight
- Cover any speaker stands to prevent individuals from tripping or knocking over your equipment
- Cover your audio equipment with a sheet of plastic while it is in storage. If the storage area or unit experiences a roof failure or contains a high amount of dust, the sheet will help block potential damages to your equipment
- If your equipment does end up getting stolen, file a police report immediately
What is Excluded Under Property/Equipment?
While you will find our Property/Equipment coverage to be one of the broadest in the country, there are some specific exclusions usual to this form of property insurance. The following is only a summary and is not all inclusive, nor does it alter or waive any of the actual policy language.
There is NO coverage, or coverage is excluded for:
- Losses greater than the replacement value of the property
- Losses greater than the limit of insurance listed on the Memorandum
- Loss due to theft from any unattended vehicle (including trailer) unless all of the following conditions have been met:
a. at the time of the loss, the covered property was contained in a fully enclosed, locked and secured body or compartment of the vehicle (including trailer); and
b. at the time of the loss, the vehicle (including trailer) had an audible alarm which was fully operational and ‘armed’; and
c. the theft resulted from forcible entry or exit - Loss or damage caused by, or made worse by:
a. deterioration, inherent vice or latent defect
b. wear and tear
c. a dishonest act of an employee (See Employee Crime) - Property that is loaned, rented or given to others. This exclusion does not apply to equipment the insured DJ provides to his/her employees or subcontractors performing at a venue on behalf of the insured DJ
How Do I Assess My DJ Property/Equipment and Report the Correct Values?
When purchasing property/equipment coverage, all items to be insured should be valued with the replacement cost (what you would pay today for a brand new item), not the actual cash value. It is not necessarily what you paid when you originally bought the item. You want to insure your items for the cost it would take to replace them today.
What Will I Need To Provide To Prove A Loss Under Property/Equipment Coverage?
At the time of a loss, you, the insured DJ, will need to prove that you actually owned the property/equipment that is being claimed as lost or damaged. This applies to both DJ equipment and media such as CDs, KDs, MP3s or Vinyls. This proof may be in the form of original purchase receipts, pictures or a video of the DJ property, or an appraisal.
Employee Crime
Since dishonest acts of employees (such as theft of all of the DJ equipment by an employee) are excluded from the Property/Equipment coverage, Employee Crime was created to fill the coverage gap.
Who is Insured Under Employee Crime?
Employee Crime is available to any DJ (with or without employees) or other individuals operating DJ owned equipment or setups.
What is Insured Under Employee Crime?
Employee Crime protects you against exposure to financial losses due to employee dishonesty, forgery, alteration, theft, disappearance or destruction. It also provides coverage for moneys that may be collected at the venue site. This policy has three coverages that are outlined below for your reference, each with a separate per loss limit.
Employee Dishonesty
Provides protection, up to the limit selected and subject to a per loss deductible, for the loss of money, securities and other DJ equipment or property resulting directly from one or more fraudulent or dishonest acts committed by an employee acting alone or in collusion with others.
Forgery Or Alteration
Provides protection, up to the limit selected and subject to a per loss deductible, for loss resulting from forgery or alteration of outgoing checks, drafts, promissory notes and similar instruments drawn against the Insured’s accounts.
Theft Disappearance and Destruction
Provides protection, up to the limit selected and subject to a per loss deductible, for the loss of money, securities and other DJ equipment or property resulting directly from one or more fraudulent or dishonest acts committed by an employee acting alone or with others.
PART A: Loss Inside The Premises
Provides protection, up to the limit selected and subject to a per loss deductible, for the loss of money and securities by the actual destruction, disappearance or wrongful abstraction thereof, within the premises.
PART B: Loss Outside The Premises
Provides protection up to the limit selected and subject to a per loss deductible, for the loss of money and securities by the actual destruction, disappearance or wrongful abstraction thereof, outside the premises while being conveyed by a messenger, or while within the living quarters in the home of any messenger. In most cases, the ‘messenger’ would be your DJ employee collecting money or checks on your behalf.
